NEW TO HOME BUSINESS

I WANT TO WORK FOR MYSELF, BUT ......

By Yank Elliot, MBA & IAHBE Staff Writer

Self-employment is like a diet.

Every diet will work...It's true, but only if you follow the plan exactly, adhere strictly to the portions, and exercise regularly. In fact, if you simply restrict your portions, eat healthful foods, and exercise, you can lose weight with no diet at all. However, most people will use a diet program to reach a weight goal and then go back to unhealthly eating habits and stop exercising.

Guess what? They're fatter than ever in about a year.

So it is with self-employment. If you find a business you like, find out how to run it, and actually do something, you will eventually succeed. Your first try may fail, but so may the first diet you use. Neither comes automatically or overnight; you have to stick with your plan for success.

Nearly everyone wants to work for themselves in their own business from their home. However, for so many, the ideal business costs little or nothing to start, requires no financial commitment and no work, and is an automatic success bringing in thousands of dollars every month...Oh, and by all means, there is absolutely NO selling involved. These folks are in for sore disappointment when they come to realize that, in spite of all the hype they've heard, there is no such business.

Take this example for instance—it's the exact text from an e-mail I recently received from one of my readers:

I want to ask you about something that I need for myself, which is an AUTOMATIC INTERNET MONEY MACHINE . I don't know how to go about this, so I decided to contact you. Please help me to create it, and show me how to make money through Internet facilities...

This person has a "fantasy" about starting a business and making money with little to no effort on his part. The reality is that every business requires some "seed" money for setup, in addition to at least a little more money on a regular basis for advertising, products, and ongoing business expenses. At least some effort is required to decide what business you want, what products to sell, and how to get customers. Some of these duties may be outsourced to others, but you—the entrepreneur—will have to arrange and pay for this.

This means that YOU have to take charge of your business and take action to progress toward success.

I told my reader in the above example these facts, and that was the end of that. My offer to help was declined because of his totally unrealistic expectations. In cases like these, there are usually several predictable "buts" that they come up with:

I don't think I can succeed.
I'm not disciplined enough.
I don't want all that responsibility.
It's not a real job, and I need a real job to fulfill my needs
I don't know how or what to do to run a business of my own.
I don't have enough money.
It takes too much time.
I don't like to sell.
I don't like face-to-face meetings.
I won't like the isolation of working alone.
Most of these inhibiting ideas have been instilled in North American culture from birth. Our parents, our schools, our churches, and our acquaintances all tell us we must be loyal, hard-working employees for someone else so we can eventually retire to the "good life." This perception can even be traced all the way back to ancient Greece, where the Sophists, a group of itinerant teachers, promised to give students the necessary knowledge and skills to gain positions with the city-state...In other words, students would be trained to work for someone else and this was a wonderful thing.

Further evidence of this mindset can be found in an article, "The Meaning of Education," posted at Teacher's Mind Resources (http://www.teachersmind.com/education.htm), where the author states:

It is clear in listening to the language of education that its primary focus is on knowledge and teaching rather than on the learner. Students are expected to conform to schools rather than schools serving the needs of students.

A look at the mission statements of two high schools on opposite U.S. coasts only confirms this attitude. One states its mission is the acquisition of knowledge and the development of personal, cultural, and democratic values essential for future success. The other says the mission is to prepare students to become productive, thinking members of society. What the educators are really saying is that they are training everyone to make money for someone else. Rarely do schools show students how to make money for themselves.

The good news is that any individual who wants their own business bad enough can overcome all of these objections.

Let's examine the "buts" we mentioned above one at a time.

I don't think I can succeed.
Did you think you could ride a bicycle or drive a car? Probably not at first. But you got someone to show you how, and now you do these things without thinking. It's second nature. A good way to find how to succeed is to see what successful people have done and copy their actions. There's no need to re-invent the wheel. Your IAHBE membership gives you access to tons of interviews with successful people every month. Study and learn from them how to succeed.

I'm not disciplined enough.
Well, think about this. You have enough discipline to go to school every day, go to work somewhere, and take care of all the daily tasks required to operate your own life. You are certainly able to run your own business. If this doesn't convince you, do a search on Amazon.com (see details of Amazon search under Resources at the bottom of this article) and read excerpts from several of the books and/or buy them for further reading. You could also stop by your local library to find what you need.

I don't want all that responsibility.
You are responsible for operating your household on a daily basis. You assume many responsibilities for your employer. Why make all the money for someone else? Just take on the same kinds of responsibilities for your own business and make money for yourself.

It's not a real job, and I need a real job to fulfill my needs.
True, when you first begin to work for yourself, you may still need some kind of steady employment to pay the bills. Never forget, though, there is little employer loyalty to employees nowadays—jobs are being outsourced overseas at a rapid rate, and manufacturing jobs have nearly disappeared. You basically don't have a real job now; you just don't know it yet. This is why you should begin to work for yourself on the side even when you are in high school. When you learn how to be a successful entrepreneur on your own, you can work for yourself full time if you wish.

I don't know how or what to do to run a business of my own.
There are thousands of books and Internet sites telling you how to successfully operate a business. A good place to start would be the U.S. Small Business Administration ( http://www.sba.gov/ or the SCORE Website (http://www.score.org/).

I don't have enough money.
Clean out your attic and garage; have a yard sale or sell the stuff on eBay (http://www.ebay.com/). If you want your business enough you'll find the money. Perhaps it can come from family or friends, your savings, credit cards, your bank, or the SBA (http://www.sba.gov/). If you want it bad enough you will figure how to do it. Just don't panic, and never, ever give up.

It takes too much time.
What are you doing that's more important than building a sound financial future for you and your family? It's just another case of "if you want it enough, you'll find time to do it."

I don't like to sell.
Most of us say we don't like to sell, but consider this: How did you get your spouse, partner, or friend? You sold them on you. How did you achieve your spot on the athletic team? You sold the coach on your abilities. It's the same with your job or any of the other things you do. Life is a constant selling operation to get the things we want.

I don't like face-to-face meetings.
Modern communications do away with most of these. E-mail, chat rooms, conference calls, and cell phones make meetings a waste of time. If you have to talk with several people at once, just arrange a convenient time and get everyone together on a conference call, many of which are extremely affordable and easy to set up (See the IAHBE Tool Review on Conference Calls for more info.). These can even be done with live pictures using the right equipment.

I won't like the isolation of working alone.
You don't have to be alone. You work for yourself, you're the boss, and you can do what you want when you want. You must get the job done, but you can work hard for a while and take a break at the local coffee shop. What's isolated about that?

The point is that there really are no valid excuses for not having your own business...if you really want it.

How to perform a search on Amazon:
1. Click http://www.amazon.com/.
2. In the top left sidebar where it says "all products," pull down the list and click "books."
3. In the next window (which is blank) enter the subject you wish to search, for example "self discipline." (My search turned up over 72,000 titles! The most relevant titles will be at the top.)
4. Pick the most interesting title and click the book title.
5a. To view specific phrases click "Search inside this book." You'll be asked to register if you have never done this. (Don't worry, you won't be charged for anything unless you go on and make a purchase.)
5b. Click "more product details"; here, you will find reviews and the book's sales rank with Amazon.com. Any rank below 10,000 probably indicates relative popularity. But get what you want; number 200,000 may be closer to your requirements.

MARKETING STRATEGIES

HOW TO GET A KNOCK OUT WEBSITE !

By Daegan Smith

The first step in setting up an online business...

Starting an online business for a brand new entrepreneur is a lot like falling in love for the first time. There is enthusiasm, the feeling of a new high in life and determination to make it work at all costs. All superior emotions, but making sure that your business grows will also take a sharp reality check. The reality is that along with enthusiasm and determination, you also need to be a smart marketer to make your business profitable. Marketing for profits has today moved beyond the traditional methods to include the Internet. A "Brick & Mortar" business works much better if it becomes a " Click & Mortar" business. Simply
put, any business without a web presence is soon going to be yesterday's news.

Setting up an online business involves creating a well- planned company website to promote your Internet sales as well as your offline business. So the key task here is to create a website. A website in effect is your company's brochure on the Internet. It gives information on the company's set up, products and services, promotional offers, new features/ products and information about the people spearheading the business. The difference here is that the website can do more than just be a static information providing page on the web. In other words, your website should be an interactive, intelligent brochure for your
company. Other than giving information, it should also -

* Maximise total sales
* Generate new business and sales leads
* Build your brand
* Give publicity to the offline business

The key here is having a website that will knock the socks off your competition. Setting up a site like this doesn't have to be an overwhelming job, leaving you gasping for oxygen. Your website can become the primary driver for the business's growth, which is why you must take a lot of care while setting it up. Though there are no rules of thumb todo this, here are some suggestions to get you on your way.

1. Research you must: Take a look at your competitors' websites. The idea here is not to ape their design and content, but to see what works, what doesn't and what are buyers looking for when they visit your site. Keep an eye out for 'spoilers': static pages, long downloads, too many moving graphics, very little or outdated information, dead links etc. Make sure you avoid these trouble points. Another good reason for researching websites is that this way you can make sure your website is different from your competitor's.

2. Define the website's purpose: A lot of people don't really know what they want their website to do. Its nice to make a great looking website crammed with information and racy graphics, but then what purpose does it serve? Your website could just be giving information on your company and inviting prospective customers to contact you for more. It could be an extension of your sales counter, selling products and services or your website could be doing both of the above. Before you begin creating the website, clarity on this issue.

Some important points to remember when creating a website are:

1. A good first impression: Your website should be pleasing to the eye and make a good first impression. First impressions really are the last, because in the fast world of the WWW, all it takes is a click for your prospective customer to get out of your site and go to the competition. Make sure you spell out your USP in the first 20 lines, have a simple URL which will be easy to remember and do knock off some of those graphics.

2. Easy navigation: The website should have a clear structure so that it is easy for the visitor to get about on a site tour without getting lost each time. For instance, have a "Go to Homepage", "Go to Top" button on each page. Give useful links on the top half of the page and make the links look like links. An absolute must here is a Sitemap and a Search tool. Nothing makes our lives easier than having a map that tells you exactly where we are and how to get to the place we want to go to.

3. Quality Content: Almost everybody values quality content, which is not a fine example of plagiarism. Nothing is a bigger put off than to see website after website saying the same things. Your website's content should have real value for the customer. If you are selling a product on the website, your content should be centred around that, if it is a service you are offering tell your visitors about how it will be useful for them.

4. Contact Information: Tell your visitors where they can contact you for more information, feedback and business queries. Without this feature your website is dead before it begins.

Your website can fuel your sales and profits like no one's business. With good research, planning and a clarity on website objectives you can make it happen. Make your site usable and valuable to the visitors and keep them coming
back for more.

MOTIVATION

FEED YOUR FAITH AND YOUR FEARS WILL STARVE TO DEATH

By Kurt Hurley

Fear… The most overrated concept known to man! Fear is not reality, but rather a perception of reality. Interesting how all of mankind suffers this ‘perceived’ condition. The truth is, although we all have our fears, each of us can and should overcome this ‘self-concept of an unknown reality, all it really takes is the proper mindset, determination and will power to surmount this ‘elusive’ machination known as FEAR!

We all know, everyone has some sort of fear and most probably, it was brought about by any one or more of the following reasons.

1) A traumatic past incident; like being bitten by a dog or falling of an elevated structure.

2) The negative influence of other people.

3) Negative ways of thinking or perceiving.

4) Speaking in public and not having it go so well.

Okay, so we all have something we fear… Are you willing to let fear take over your life? Will you forever remain a hostage to your fear?

I’m not so…

Like me, if you are truly interested in eradicating your personal demons, you must emphatically take the necessary steps to overcome whatever it is that disables you. It's all in the mind.

Do you envy other people that fearlessly take a ride on the ‘wild side’? Do you just hang back observing other people living life and creating success?

Personally, my suggestion is to face your fear head-on, don’t let fear be the boss of you. Imagine yourself enjoying the experience of exhilaration, the excitement of staring fear in the face and winning and not succumbing to the crippling effects of the would of’s, could of’s, and should of’s! That’s no way to ‘live’ your life.

So maybe you want to be a doctor, but you're afraid that you can’t academically or intellectually make the grade? Or perhaps you're worried about financial insecurity or destitution?

Well here's the good news. If you're really determined to achieve your deepest desires, a powerful force will enable
you to reach them amidst every obstacle that gets in the way.

Someone or something will always be there to help you attain your goals. Just have faith in your abilities, be patient, persist and be grateful for the lessons you learn and you will succeed. Your willpower, your earnest desire
and belief have a paramount capacity to assist you in your ability to accomplish anything.

Marry visualization with that desire, that belief and that willpower and you are in route to defeating any kind of fear.

Try this… let’s say you’re afraid of heights. Close your eyes and imagine yourself being on top of a mountain,
overseeing the magnificent sights, feel the breeze on your face, smell the clean, fresh air, the sun warming your
cheek. Take it in, enjoy and experience the moment. Let it take away all your worries and anxieties. This is your
life. Don’t be afraid.

As Nike suggests… “Just do it! Face it head on! Savor the event of facing your fear; what do you have to lose? This applies to whatever that triggers your fear factor. Clearly see yourself defeating it, then confront it with
the definite knowing that you have the capacity to do anything and everything you want if you just put your mind
to it. Mind over matter!

Statistics have proven that those that have faced the thing they feared the most, never fear anything again in their
life. Sounds good to me.

TECHNOLOGY

5 SIMPLE SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION ( SEO )

TECHNIQUES

By Noah Ulrich

The lifeblood of any website/e-commerce business is traffic, and every webmaster knows the best type of traffic is natural, organic search engine traffic.

There are two very important reasons for this:

(1) it is extremely targeted, and
(2) It is FREE!

The hard part is getting top ranking for your sites keywords... or is it?

The purpose of this article is to provide a few simple, effective, and most important, search engine friendl strategies to help boost your websites' ranking and ultimately your traffic.

1. We will start with the Meta Tags.

I know you have already heard of, and are probably currently using meta tags on your site. This is great. I just want to make sure you are using them effectively. We will only go over 2 tags: the "title" tag, and the "description" tag. We will not go over the "keywords" tag, as the major search engines have placed less and less weight on this one, and some would argue this tag has no weight at all. I still use this tag however, as I feel there is some merit and no drawbacks to using this tag.

I have found it effective to use similar text in the "title" and "description" tags, and to place your keywords
prominently in these tags (near the beginning and more than once). I have seen sites with "sitename.com", "New Page 1", or "Welcome to my site" in the "title" tag, which really does not help in their quest for higher rankings for their particular keyword. Also, try not to use words such as "and", "or", or "the" in these tags.

**Important note about your keywords.

Search engines evaluate keyword prominence, keyword weight, and keyword density when determining a site's ranking. All three are calculated individually for the page, the title tag, the description tag, as well as other areas on a page. Keyword prominence means how close the keyword is to the beginning of your page. Keyword weight refers to how many times a particular keyword or phrase can be found on the page. Keyword density is the ratio of the keyword to the other words on the page. You do not want the keyword weight or density to be too high, as this can appear to the search engine as "keyword stuffing" and most search engines penalize sites that stuff their keywords.

2. Place your navigational links (and JavaScript) at the right or at the bottom, but not on the left, of the page.

When the search engines "read" your site, they read from the top left to the bottom right. Search engines place an emphasis on the first 100 words or text on the site. You do not want these words to be navigational links or Javascript. Ideally, you want to have your "heading" tags with your keywords in the beginning of your page. This being said, placing your links/JavaScript on the right or bottom of your page ensures the search engine spiders get to the text first, giving more weight to what's important on your page.

3. Place alt tags on all of your images.

Search engine spiders cannot "read" pictures or images. The only way a spider knows what an image is about is by reading the alt tag. This is also another chance to place more of your keywords in your HTML, improving your page's keyword weight/density. Alt tags are easy to make and they can make a big difference in your sites keyword ranking. A simple alt tag looks like this: alt="put your keyword phrase
here." Search engines separately calculate keyword prominence, density, and weight in alt tags as well, so optimize your tags.

4. Place your keywords at the bottom of your page.

Just as search engines place more weight on the first words of your
page, they also do the same to the last words. The general thinking is this, if your site is about a certain subject, then the main points, or keywords, should, appear at the beginning, be spread throughout the page, and be prominent at the conclusion. But if you have all of your navigational links and JavaScript at the bottom, your relevant page text could end well before the HTML does. An easy way to have
your keywords at the bottom of your page is to include them in the copyright information. For example, if you have a dog food website, you could have something like this at the very bottom of the page:

copyright 2005 yoursite.com World's best dog food

Search engines are not (as of this writing), penalizing sites using this technique, and it wouldn't really make much sense for them to do so.

5. The Anchor Text of your links.

Anchor text is the actual linking text on a site. It is what the user clicks on to navigate to that particular site or page. If a search engine finds many links to your site using the term "dog food", then the search engine concludes your site is about "dog food". This is overlooked quite often, but it seems to have a very large impact on your search engine rankings for a particular keyword. Your anchor text needs to be the keyword or phrase you are trying to target. Try to avoid anchor text such as "Click Here" or "www.yoursite.com"

Also, if you're running a reciprocal link campaign, be sure to use variations of your text. If an engine notices every link to your site is identical, it could place less weight on these links or potentially penalize your site. This is because search engines generally give more weight to "naturally occurring" links, and less to "reciprocal link exchange campaigns". Using different, but relevant anchor
text can dramatically affect your targeted keyword rankings, by making your links appear more natural.

Effective SEO may seem difficult at first, but as you have read above, little tricks that require little or no programming knowledge, can make a huge impact on your website's keyword ranking.
